Obituary of Mary Walters

WALTERS – Mary:   Formerly of Thunder Bay and more recently of Simcoe, died Wednesday November, 29 2017 at Parkview Christian Retirement Village, Townsend at the age of 89.

Mary Carle was born in Lowestoft, England August 17, 1928. She met and married George Walters in 1954. They were blessed with two children, a daughter Lesley (born in Britain) and a son James (born in Canada). The couple immigrated to Canada in 1958, residing briefly in Toronto, and the relocating to Kapuskasing where they lived until 1970. They then moved to Thunder Bay where Mary continued her role as homemaker and raised her two children.

During these years, Mary was actively involved in the community as a brownie leader, a volunteer for the Crippled Children’s Association and a member of the Thunder Bay Quilters Guild. She was known for her outstanding ability to knit and weave beautiful garments, sashes, blankets and bed coverings, many of which were generously donated to fundraising events. She was also known for her baking, much of which was sold at church bake sales and given to charity. She spent hours in her kitchen cooking up large batches of meatballs, egg rolls, jams, fruit pies, pastries and sauces and took great pride in setting a lovely table with her crystal and silverware. In 2007 Mary moved to the Simcoe area due to her declining health and to be near her son and grandchildren. Originally she resided at Cedarwood Gardens, where for many years she was able to still do some of her own shopping, carefully making rounds with her walker and becoming a favorite customer with many if the local downtown merchants. Eventually she relocated to Parkview Christian Retirement Village long term care where she resided until her passing.

Mary is survived by her husband George, daughter Lesley, son James, (Heather) and sister Gloria Stevenson (Willie), grandsons Lee, William and Tanner Walters, as well as nephew Martin Stevenson.  Cremation has taken place with a private family ceremony in Thunder Bay at a later date.  Those wishing to make a donation in Mary’s memory are asked to consider a charity of one’s choice.  Online condolences at www.baldockfuneralhome.com
